CWU expresses shock at imminent SDS closure

The Communications Workers Union has expressed its shock at An Post’s decision to close down its SDS parcel-delivery service.

The company said this morning that it was planning to shed 270 jobs as part of the closure, but it insisted the lay-offs would be secured through early retirement and voluntary redundancies.

CWU general secretary Stephen Fitzpatrick said today: “Our members woke up this morning to newspaper and radio reports that their jobs were on the line, having heard nothing whatsoever from the company.

"I’d say they’re very, very worried and very, very puzzled. We’ve made two things absolutely clear to the company - that we won’t deal with compulsory redundancy and that none of the SDS plan will be implemented without final agreement with the union.”
