Thousands descend on Croagh Patrick

30,000 people are expected to climb Croagh Patrick today as part of the annual pilgrimage to the mountain.

The Archbishop of Tuam Michael Neary celebrated mass in the Oratory at the summit of Ireland's highest peak at 10.30am.

The pilgrimage commemorates Saint Patrick's 40 day fast on the peak, following the example of Jesus and Moses as told in the Bible.

It is believed this pilgrimage has taken place every year for over 1,500 years.
