Taoiseach Bertie Ahern is reportedly coming under sustained pressure to allow his name to go forward for the post of President of European Commission.

EU leaders failed to agree on a replacement for Romano Prodi last week and reports this morning said Mr Ahern was quickly emerging as the most popular compromise candidate.
