FF TD: Referendum 'no threat to children's rights'

Fianna Fáil TD Denis O’Donovan has insisted that the Government’s citizenship referendum poses no threat to the human rights of children born to non-nationals in Ireland.

Fianna Fáil TD Denis O’Donovan has insisted that the Government’s citizenship referendum poses no threat to the human rights of children born to non-nationals in Ireland.

Mr O’Donovan, the chairman of the Oireachtas committee on the Constitution, said the Government would continue to uphold the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, whatever the outcome of the referendum.

He was responding to the Human Rights Commission’s assessment of the proposed constitutional amendment, which was published yesterday.

The commission said the referendum could lead to a situation where constitutional rights other than citizenship were denied to the children of non-national parents.
