The Tánaiste has stated that no child born in Ireland will be left stateless if the citizenship referendum is passed.

The Progressive Democrats have pledged that any child born in this country to non-national parents who is not entitled to any other citizenship will be granted Irish nationality.

They have said that the referendum is needed to close off a loophole that was created in the Good Friday Agreement.

Mary Harney today said that it is not unreasonable to be required to have a connection with the country for three years to be entitled to Irish citizenship, and that the referendum contained a fair and reasonable resolution to the issue.
