ICCL calls for ‘no’ vote in citizenship referendum

The Irish Council for Civil Liberties has called for a ‘no’ vote in the Government’s citizenship referendum on the grounds that it will create inequality and confusion about the Irish constitution.

The ICCL said the referendum would create an underclass of children whose rights were dependent on their parents.

The council also said it would cause confusion about Article Two of the Constitution, which says all children born in Ireland are part of the Irish nation, and would interfere with the Good Friday Agreement.

The ICCL is due to launch its campaign for a ‘no’ vote later today.
