'Drugs mule' stopped at airport

A 31-year-old Ghanian man was being questioned by gardaí tonight after flying into Dublin airport with cocaine valued at €30,000 concealed internally.

The drugs were found and recovered after the man was X-rayed in hospital.

The suspect had arrived on a flight from Ghana, via Amsterdam.

He had 39 tablets inside his body, weighing a total of 400 grammes.

The incident was the fourth of its kind detected at Dublin airport in the past six months.

A spokesman for the customs service said that people involved in the attempting smuggling activity of that type often died from a drugs overdose when natural stomach acids eroded the packaging on the drugs.

:: Three people were still being interviewed by police in Cork tonight following the seizure of cocaine, ecstasy tablets, cannabis resin and cash at three locations in and around the city.
