Green Party TD Paul Gogarty was ejected from the Dáil today following heated exchanges with the Ceann Comhairle, Rory O’Hanlon.

Mr Gogarty had attempted to raise the plight of hunger striker Tom Sweeney, but Mr O’Hanlon said the question was not in line with Dáil business.

Mr Sweeney, who suffered abuse at two children’s homes in the 1950s and 1960s, has been on hunger strike outside the Dáil for three weeks in protest at his treatment by the Residential Institutions Redress Board.

The 57-year-old was originally offered €113,000 in compensation because of the abuse he suffered, but this was reduced to around €70,000 after he chose to tell his story to the board.
