€6m investment planned for Co Galway harbour
A new €6 million investment has been announced for Ros-a-Mhíl Fishery Harbour in Co Galway.
Sanction for the investment was given today in a development which will be jointly funded by the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources and the Department of Community Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.
The development provides for the provision of modern dedicated ferry berths, with a water depth in excess of three metres.
Also included in the development is of dredging in the inner Harbour area and in the navigation channel.
Minister for the Marine, Dermot Ahern said: “There will be significant benefits arising from this development, including the separation of fishing and ferry activity, which will address many Health and Safety issues associated with the present operation.
€3m in funding is available from Minister Ahern’s Department funds (€2m in 2004 and €1m in 2005), with matching funding from the Department of Community Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.
