Mechanical carcass grading to replace officers

Beef processors have agreed to the introduction of mechanical carcass grading.

The required machinery will be put in place during the summer.

However, the withdrawal of department classification officers has been postponed until August 1.

Agriculture Minister Joe Walsh says the mechanical classification is an important step for the beef industry, towards securing its future as a high-quality supplier to EU consumer markets.
