Smoke ban a health landmark, says Ahern

The launch of a blanket ban on smoking in workplaces is a very significant event for all Irish people, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said today.

As cigarettes were due to be stubbed out in pubs and restaurants throughout the Republic for the final time tonight, Mr Ahern described the ban as a landmark legislation that will protect the health of the nation.
