Policing Board chairman calls for inquiry into Troubles

The chairman of the North’s Policing Board has called for an inquiry into the violence of the Troubles in an effort to lay the past to rest.

Desmond Rea said he was making the call in a personal capacity with the support of his deputy, Denis Bradley.

Several commentators have already called for a South African-style peace and reconciliation commission to address the ongoing problems caused by the 30 years of violence that claimed more than 3,000 lives in the North up to the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
