Gillis opts out of FG euro race

Fine Gael's Alan Gillis has dropped out of the race for the nominations for the 2004 European elections.

Mr Gillis was Fine Gael MEP for Leinster from 1994 to 1999 and is also a former President of the Irish Farmers' Association.

He cited work commitments for his decision.

"Presently I am Chairman of the Tallaght Hospital Board. This position is one that I thoroughly enjoy and I am working hard with the Board of Directors to develop Tallaght Hospital into the most progressive health facility in the country.

"There are many new initiatives under consideration which will require my undivided attention.

"Accordingly, I have opted to give my time, energy and commitment to the future development of hospital services at Tallaght rather than contesting the European elections."

"I want to wish the Fine Gael Leader, Enda Kenny TD, every success and to assure him of my full support for Fine Gael in the European election campaign."
