Former football idol George Best was today banned from driving for 20 months and fined £1,500 (€2,200) after pleading guilty to drink-driving.

Best, 57, was told by magistrates that he had been “irresponsible” and that his behaviour had been “unacceptable”.

Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court in south-west London heard that he had driven after drinking following a blazing row with his son Calum.

After the row in a restaurant, Best had been trying to drive himself to a health farm having realised that he needed to resolve his problems, the court was told.

When police stopped him, Best was nearly two and a half times the limit.
