Fitzgerald to answer questions on bombings

Former Taoiseach Garret Fitzgerald is due to appear before the Oireachtas justice committee today to answer questions about the Dublin and Monaghan bombings.

The committee is currently investigating the findings of the Barron Report into the atrocities, which killed 33 people on May 17, 1974.

The report accused the Government of the time of showing little interest in apprehending and prosecuting those responsible for the attacks.

Mr Fitzgerald, who was Foreign Affairs Minister at the time, is expected to reject that finding and defend the actions of the Fine Gael/Labour coalition of the day.
