The transfer of prisoners from Fort Mitchell Prison at Spike Island in Cork got underway today as part of a plan to close the prison by the end of the month.

The transfer of prisoners from Fort Mitchell Prison at Spike Island in Cork got underway today as part of a plan to close the prison by the end of the month.

The Prison Officers Association is against the move, which occurs while talks aimed at resolving the row over prison officers overtime is underway.

A total of 90 staff at Spike Island are to be transferred to Cork and Limerick prisons within the next two weeks.

A number of prisoners have already been transferred to St Patrick's Institution in Dublin.
