Finucane family begin legal action today

Relatives of murdered solicitor Pat Finucane are due to begin legal action today in an effort to force the British government to publish further details of the Cory Report into his murder.

The British government has refused to publish the document, saying it has to consider its own national security issues and the possibility that publication could infringe the human rights of those named in the report.

The Finucane family is seeking a judicial review of that decision at the High Court in Belfast today.

Retired Canadian judge Peter Cory, who compiled the report, has already told the family that he has recommended a full public inquiry into allegations of collusion in Mr Finucane’s murder.

Pat Finucane was shot dead at his home in north Belfast in February 1989.
