Man arrested over claims of sexual assault

Gardaí in Galway are questioning a man in his twenties over an alleged sexual assault in the grounds of the historic St. Mary's Cathedral in Tuam.

A teenage girl from the town is alleged to have been sexually assaulted in or near a derelict house on the church grounds.

Gardaí said the incident happened early yesterday morning or late on Thursday night.

The young man from the Tuam area was arrested earlier today in connection with the incident.
