Unions, bosses to discuss Cork lay-offs

Unions representing workers at Schering Plough in Co Cork are due to meet the company’s management today to discuss its plans to lay off 170 workers.

The Innishannon-based pharmaceutical firm announced the lay-offs yesterday, blaming a fall in sales and market share.

The company said it hoped it could secure a number of voluntary redundancies from its 930-strong workforce.

Other workers would not have their contracts renewed, it said.
