Mary Harney has said she regrets the loss of 170 jobs at the Schering-Plough facility at Inishannon, Co Cork.

The Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment said that though this announcement was not unexpected, it was very disappointing news.

Schering-Plough Corporation had indicated last year that it was to cut its worldwide payroll expenses by 10%.

Harney said this afternoon: "The main priority and focus at this time is to ensure that all those losing their jobs are given the necessary assistance they may require.

"The commitment of the company together with the resources of FAS and other state agencies will be made available to assist them in finding alternative employment."
