Transport Minister Seamus Brennan is defending the Government's allocation of funding to Iarnróid Éireann to buy new carriages which have more standing room than seating.

Transport Minister Seamus Brennan is defending the Government's allocation of funding to Iarnróid Éireann to buy new carriages which have more standing room than seating.

The budget contained a commitment for the funding.

Mr Brennan says that standing on short journeys does not pose a safety risk.

He says that research shows that short term standing areas are safe.
