CPA calls for waiver scheme for bin charges

The Combat Poverty Agency is calling for the introduction of a national waiver scheme for bin charges.

The agency says that such waivers should be available from all refuse collection operators for low income and poor households.

A study by MABS, the Money Advice and Budgeting Service, says that some of its clients are getting into debt because of the charges.

Maria McCaul, from MABS in North Donegal, says that for some low-income families, the charge is equivalent to a spend of €2,000 for someone who is actually on €40,000 a year.
