Ahern rejects criticism of cutbacks, taxes

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has rejected accusations that cutbacks and stealth taxes included in last week’s Book of Estimates were targeting the less well-off.

Groups representing the poor and disadvantaged have slammed the cutbacks, which include restrictions on the rent allowance scheme and increases in A&E charges, among other measures.
