Justice Minister urged to clarify stance on incineration

The Green Party has called on Justice Minister Michael McDowell to clarify his stance on the use of incinerators in Ireland.

Party spokesman John Gormley said today that Mr McDowell told a meeting of residents in his constituency last night that he was opposed to the construction of an incinerator on the Poolbeg Peninsula in Dublin.

Mr Gormley said the minister also told the Sandymount and Merrion Residents Association that he would vote against the inclusion of incineration in the proposed national infrastructure bill.

The Green Party spokesman said the Mr McDowell should now clarify if he was merely posturing for local popularity or was actually prepared to oppose government policy.

The minister’s official spokesman later denied that Mr McDowell had made the comments.
