Three arrested in Athlone murder probe

Gardaí in Co Westmeath have arrested two men and a woman in connection with the murder of a 51-year-old man in Athlone last month.

The three were arrested in the Athlone area at around 7.30am.

They are being questioned about the death of Michael Chambers, whose body was found on a footpath under a bridge in the town on October 13.

A post mortem found that Mr Chambers, who was originally from Portadown, Co Armagh had been repeatedly beaten about the head.

He had apparently been living in Cork and was believed to have been travelling to visit his mother in the North when he was attacked in Athlone.
