The British government has officially announced that Assembly elections will go ahead in the North despite the failure of Sinn Féin and the UUP to agree a deal on IRA decommissioning.

In a statement released today, Downing Street said it "had not proved possible" to resolve differences over decommissioning during talks over the weekend.
