Two face murder charges in NI court today

The neighbour of a man found dead in a burning shed in Limavady, Co Derry, was today charged with his murder.

Ronald Hazlett, aged 38, of Glenlea Park in Limavady was charged at Derry Magistrates Court with killing Barney McLaughlin, aged 51, whose body was found by fire officers called to the blaze at a derelict cattle market.

A 15-year-old youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was also charged with murdering Mr McLaughlin.

A Detective Sergeant told the court that when charged Hazlett replied: “I murdered no one.”

He said that when the same charge was put to the teenager, he said: “Not guilty.”

Both defendants were remanded in custody to appear again by video link on November 6.
