Exchequer deficit tops €1bn

The exchequer deficit topped €1bn in the first three quarters of the year, figures from the Department of Finance showed tonight.

The €1.03bn total compared to a surplus of €594m at this time last year, with the turnaround blamed on sharp stemming of the flow of cash into government coffers.
