Fine Gael TD Gay Mitchell has slammed the Taoiseach’s indication that he would consider sending Irish soldiers to aid the US/British occupation of Iraq if the UN Security Council was to mandate an international deployment.

Fine Gael TD Gay Mitchell has slammed the Taoiseach’s indication that he would consider sending Irish soldiers to aid the US/British occupation of Iraq if the UN Security Council was to mandate an international deployment.

Mr Mitchell said today that any deployment of Irish troops must be ratified by the Dáil and he criticised Bertie Ahern for making commitments that he does not have the power to honour.
