Shop assistant struck with claw hammer

Police in the North are investigating an assault on a shop assistant who was struck on the head with a claw hammer during an attempted robbery in Co Down overnight.

The assault happened at just before 11pm at a service station on the Dundrum road, in Newcastle last night.

The 19-year-old woman was taken to hospital for treatment but was later released.
