Oireachtas Constitution committee to meet in public

The Oireachtas committee on the Constitution is due to meet in public later today to discuss the issue of property rights.

The meeting will take place at Phoenix House on Dublin’s South Leinster Street.

Two articles in the Irish Constitution deal with property rights.

However, the evolution of legislation and regulations has raised questions about the way judges interpret the Constitution when it comes to disputes on land.

These include areas such as purchasing land, zoning, appropriate development, compulsory purchase and inheritance.

The Oireachtas committee on the Constitution met last July to consider verbal presentations and is meeting again today.

Members of the public and parties with vested interests have been asked to make submissions.

The committee will consider the issues raised before making recommendations to the Government.
