The Government has expressed its regret at the resignation of Justice Mary Laffoy as chair of the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse.

Speaking in Co Laois this morning, Communications Minister Dermot Ahern promised that the victims of abuse in state-owned institutions would receive justice.

Ms Laffoy announced her decision to resign last night, but the reasons for the move were not revealed.

Earlier this week, the Government announced plans to change the remit of her inquiry, claiming it would take 11 years to complete its work if it continued at its current rate.
