Man to face trial for soldier's murder

A 24-year-old man was today due to appear before magistrates in Derry, charged with the weekend murder of a soldier on a British army base.

He is accused of shooting dead a 21-year-old soldier at Shackleton Barracks in Ballykelly on Saturday night.

Police were called to the base after the incident at around 8.30pm.

It is understood the victim was originally from England.

An Army spokesman in Northern Ireland confirmed yesterday that police had been summoned to the base on Saturday to investigate the shooting.

The spokesman expressed the Army’s sympathy to the victim’s family and friends.

However, he could not comment further while an investigation took place.
