The body of a 40-year-old psychiatric patient has been recovered from the River Shannon in Co Roscommon.

The body of a 40-year-old psychiatric patient has been recovered from the River Shannon in Co Roscommon.

The body was taken from the northern section of the river near Roosky shortly before 8pm last night.

The dead man went missing on Monday while being escorted from Dublin to Donegal by two nurses.

He had been receiving treatment at the acute mental health unit in Letterkenny General Hospital.

The North-Eastern Health Board has launched an investigation into the incident and a post mortem is due to be carried on the body later today.

Junior Minister Tim O'Malley has also asked the Inspector of Mental Hospitals to carry out an inquiry.
