The number of people claiming unemployment benefit in Ireland rose by 1.3% last month, according to figures released today by the Central Statistics Office.

The CSO said the seasonally adjusted figures for July 2003 showed an increase of 2,300 in the numbers signing on the dole, bringing the total figure to 178,500.
