Detectives today launched a new investigation into the murder of a man whose body was found in a lake 27 years ago.

Police in Derry today confirmed that they were mounting a fresh investigation into the death of Patrick Joseph Kelly, a nationalist councillor in Co Tyrone.

The body of Mr Kelly, 33, was found in Lough Eyes near Lisbellaw, Co Fermanagh.

He had been shot a number of times.

Mr Kelly disappeared after locking up a bar in the village of Trillick, Co Tyrone, on July 24, 1974.

Police had been under intense pressure to launch a fresh investigation amid claims of collusion between the killers and the security forces in the murder.
