SDLP member hit with hate mail

A prominent politician in Northern Ireland called in the police after receiving “hate mail” through the post, he said today

John Dallat, the East Derry Assembly member for the SDLP until the devolved body was suspended, said the mail consisted of a pamphlet which appeared to depict him being given the last rites.

He said he refused to be intimidated and had asked the police to investigate the pamphlet had a Scottish postmark.

Mr Dallat said: “As the peace process develops one should be able to resume a normal life.

“But clearly there are sick people in society who want to make life uncomfortable for those who are trying desperately and working very hard to reconcile the two communities and put this kind of hate mail and implied threat behind them.”
