Port Tunnel high enough for most trucks

Less than 1.7% of heavy goods vehicles that intend to use Dublin's Port Tunnel exceed the tunnel's operating height of 4.65 metres.

Less than 1.7% of heavy goods vehicles that intend to use Dublin's Port Tunnel exceed the tunnel's operating height of 4.65 metres.

The finding has been confirmed by a survey from the National Institute for Transport and Logistics.

The report stated that only a tiny amount of heavy good vehicles that intend to access the tunnel after its completion in 2005 would need to make alternative arrangements due to height restrictions.

Previously, the Irish Road Hauliers Association had claimed that the port's height limit would deter many larger trucks from using the tunnel as an alternative to using city centre streets.

Dublin City Council earlier welcomed the data.

A spokesman said: " This confirms our earlier findings that the percentage of over-height vehicles accessing the Port constitutes a miniscule proportion of the overall HGV traffic."
