Irish literacy levels 'above average'
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has reported above-average literacy levels in Ireland following tests carried out in 40 industrialised nations.
The report followed an earlier study which found that Ireland ranked 19th out of 27 countries for funding per second-level students.
This morning, the Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland said the lack of funding, coupled with low staffing levels in secondary schools, was putting Ireland's literacy levels at risk.
