The Department of Foreign Affairs has not yet released the names of the two young Irish women killed in a collision between a car and train in Portugal.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has not yet released the names of the two young Irish women killed in a collision between a car and train in Portugal.

The women from Cork, in their early twenties, died when the collision happened at a level crossing in the Algarve region yesterday.

They were believed to be marine biology students taking part in a student exchange programme.

A German teacher in the vehicle was also killed in the collision.

Two other people were seriously injured and were in a critical condition in hospital.
