Dublin author James Plunkett dies

Dublin author James Plunkett - best known for his epic novel 'Strumpet City' - passed away in a nursing home today at the age of 83.

James Plunkett was born in 1920 and educated at Synge Street Christian Brothers School and the Municipal School of Music.

He began his working life as a clerk in the Dublin Gas Company. He joined the trade union movement and worked for a time under Jim Larkin, who featured as a character in Strumpet City.

As well as fiction, he has written radio and television features, film scripts, plays and short story collections.
