The Northern Ireland peace process was plunged into a new crisis today after Northern Secretary Paul Murphy confirmed a postponement of this month’s elections to the Stormont Assembly.

Parties in Belfast had failed to reach agreement on British and Irish proposals on how the suspended powersharing executive should be restored.
