250 jobs set to go as Celestica plan to close

The Celestica electronics plant in Swords, Co Dublin, is set to announce its closure later today with the loss of 250 jobs.

The company had halved its 500-strong workforce last August in an attempt to return to profitability.

Green Party TD Trevor Sergeant blamed the Government's reliance on foreign multinationals for today's news and said the Tanaiste must make a greater effort than setting up the usual jobs taskforce.

"I would ask that the Government look again at Government policy which has increased funding to the IDA and thereby putting a lot of hope in the foreign direct investment sector while decreasing investment in Enterprise Ireland, which is really where we need to work with indigenous companies to build up employment so that there will be some kind of safety net," he said.
