The Irish National Teachers Organisation has branded the condition of some primary school buildings across the country is a "scandal".

President of the INTO, Gerry Malone, says a spate of pre-election promises to improve their schools have not come through for thousands of Irish children.

Mr Malone says the Minister for Education needs to take steps to improve teaching conditions.

"We have school buildings across the country that are overcrowded. Children, parents and teachers deserve better.

"It's not good enough in the year 2003 that children at primary level have to accept accommodation and resources like this."
