Huge rise reported in race-related equality claims

Race has overtaken gender as the main grounds for claims taken to the Equality Tribunal, according to figures for the first three months of this year.

The tribunal said it dealt with 33 cases of alleged racial discrimination up to the end of March this year, compared with just five in the first quarter of 2002.
