Police and soldiers came under attack last night from a mob throwing paint bombs, bricks and bottles in East Belfast.

Last night’s disturbances began when a crowd approached military vehicles in Bryson Street from the Newtownards Road.

A digger stolen from a building site in the nearby Severn Street was used to attack a CCTV camera pole and knock it down.

Additional police and soldiers were drafted into the area but it is understood the crowd dispersed shortly afterwards.

The digger was later abandoned in the nearby Harland Walk area.

No police or military personnel are believed to have been injured during the clashes which took place near to where a pipe bomb was discovered on Tuesday night.
