The European Commission has announced the allocation of €1.3m to cover the cost of slaughtering Irish cattle as part of efforts to eradicate BSE.

The funding is based on estimates provided to the EC by the Irish Government and comes on top of the €2.7m already allocated to compensate farmers for the compulsory slaughter of their animals.
