Witness claims husband's violence ignored

The main witness at the Morris Tribunal has accused gardaí in Buncrana, Co Donegal, of turning a blind eye to her husband's violence.

Sheenagh McMahon said all the local gardaí, if not everyone in the town, knew that she was being beaten by her husband, Detective Noel McMahon.

She described how she went to the home of Superintendent Kevin Lennon after one such beating and how Mr Lennon expressed disgust at her husband's actions.

However, Mr Lennon pointed out that he had urged her to make a formal complaint, but she declined to do so.

Mrs McMahon, who has accused her husband and Mr Lennon of staging hoax explosive finds in the early 1990s to further their own careers, has been giving evidence to the tribunal for the last four days.
