Ahern defends US use of Shannon

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has given his strongest indication yet that he will allow the US military to use Shannon Airport in the event of war against Iraq, regardless of the views of the UN Security Council.

Speaking after a meeting with US President George W Bush in Washington last night, Mr Ahern said Shannon was not a military facility and was not operating as one.
