Two held in Raonaid murder probe

Gardai today arrested two men in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 17-year-old girl in 1999.

Officers said the pair were arrested near Dublin this morning as part of the ongoing investigation into the murder of Raonaid Murray.

One man was arrested in Lucan and the other in Dun Laoghaire. They were said to be in their 20s and early 30s.

A house in Lucan was searched by officers and items were taken away for examination.

Ms Murray was killed early on September 4, 1999 in Glenageary, south Co Dublin as she walked through a tree-lined passage a short distance from her home in Sylchester Park.

She was stabbed repeatedly with a broad-blade knife in what was described as a frenzied attack, and suffered severe wounds to her side, forearm, shoulder and upper chest.

Gardai interviewed thousands of people as part of a major murder investigation.

Two years after Miss Murray was killed, her family issued an appeal for information, saying that by keeping quiet people were allowing her murderer to walk free.
